Meet Dr. Sara Hernberg

Hernburg, Sara_4Sara Hernberg, MD, a Family Medicine physi­cian, has joined FamilyHealth Medical Clinic.

Dr. Hernberg began seeing patients of all ages at FamilyHealth’s Northfield clinic on August 20. She comes to FamilyHealth from Aberdeen, SD, where she practiced at Sanford Health.

A native of Finland, Dr. Hernberg earned her medical degree from University of Helsinki. She did her Family Medicine residency and graduate work at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Hernberg is fluent in English, Finnish, Swedish and German.

Dr. Hernberg said she is fascinated by the science of medicine; her father was a physician, too. Dr. Hernberg’s goal is to provide individualized care to all her patients, and to make the best decisions possible to maintain health and reduce suffering.

Dr. Hernberg’s expertise complements that of Family Medicine providers at FamilyHealth, including Adam Ailabouni, MD; Internal Medicine specialists Katie Helgen, MD, and Randolph Reister, MD; plus pediatricians Ben Flannery, MD, and Todd Amunrud, D.O.

Northfield Hospital Dietitians Host “Mindful Eating” Seminar on Sept. 24

With the chill of Fall approaching, eating habits start to change – whether we notice or not.

The dietitians of Northfield Hospital & Clinics will host “Mindful Eating,” a seminar designed to help participants shift out of a diet mentality, and enjoy eating instead.

The one-hour session will be led by Kristi Von Ruden, RDN, LD, registered dietitian nutritionist coordinator at Northfield Hospital. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is preferred; walk-ins are welcome as space allows.

Often when people think about food and health, they focus on diet and weight control. Mindful eating is a different perspective that helps people approach nutrition and wellness from a positive viewpoint.

Northfield Hospital & Clinics collaborates with the Y to promote wellness in the community. All participants for “Mindful Eating” will receive two free days at the Y.



Meet Dr. Nicole Dohm-Palmer

DOHM-PALMER, Nicole-5Nicole Dohm-Palmer, MD, an Obstetrics and Gynecology physician, joined Women’s Health Center on September 8. She will see women and adolescent patients at Women’s Health Center Northfield and FamilyHealth Medical Clinic – Farmington.

Dr. Dohm-Palmer comes to Women’s Health Center from United and Abbott Northwestern Hospitals, where she was an emergency obstetrician. She is board-certified as a Fellow in the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Dohm-Palmer earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota and did her resi­dency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is also a graduate of Carleton College.

“I see myself as a partner with my patients to optimize health, choose treatments for problems, and promote healthy pregnancies for both moms and babies,” she says.

Dr. Dohm-Palmer learned early on that medicine allows her to apply her love of science with people.

“I am an extrovert at heart and love people. The most rewarding part of medicine is that I get to es­tablish life-long relationships with my patients and positively impact their lives,” she says.

Her professional interests include delivering babies, minimally-invasive surgery including lapa­roscopy, endometrial ablations, and treatment for urinary incontinence.

Dr. Mickelson joins Women’s Health Center

MICKELSON, Kaye-5Kaye Mickelson, MD, an Obstetrics and Gyne­cology physician, is joining Women’s Health Center on September 22. She will see female patients of all ages at the Women’s Health Center Northfield and FamilyHealth Medical Clinics – Lakeville.

Dr. Mickelson comes to Women’s Health Center from Allina Women’s Health in St. Paul.

Dr. Mickelson is board-certified in OB/GYN and has over 20 years of experience. She earned her medical degree from the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine and did her residency at the University of Minnesota.

It was during medical school that she discovered her passion for delivering babies, and performing surgeries to im­prove the lives of women.

“I like to listen to the patients, explain the best options and invite patients to participate in discus­sion and decision making,” she says.

Dr. Mickelson has special training in advanced laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, plus medical and surgical treatment of menopausal symptoms. Her interests include treatment of endome­triosis, diagnosis and treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding, menopause, and diagnosis and treatment of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

And, of course, delivering babies.

Dermatologist coming to Lakeville

Dr. Kalaaji

Amer Kalaaji, MD, a Mayo Clinic specialist in Dermatology, will begin seeing patients at FamilyHealth Medical Clinic in Lakeville July 13.

Dr. Kalaaji, an associate professor at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, will be in Lakeville three days a week. His services are provided by Mayo Clinic Specialty Services.

A graduate of University of Toronto School of Medicine, Dr. Kalaaji performed his internship at Toronto General Hospital and his dermatology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. where he served as Chief Resident. He also did graduate work at the University of Toronto’s Department of Pathology.

Kathleen Meier, Clinic Services Administrator at Northfield Hospital & Clinics, says Dr. Kalaaji brings a valuable service to FamilyHealth Medical Clinic.
