Abnormal Pap Smears and ColposcopyIf you have recently had an abnormal Pap test, your physician may recommend colposcopy to evaluate the cervix. Read about Pap smears and abnormal results here. Read about colposcopy here. Prior to your scheduled colposcopy, please refrain from using tampons, douching, or sexual intercourse for 24 hours. Some women find that taking over-the-counter ibuprofen (400-600 mg) or acetaminophen (650-1000mg) one hour before the procedure lessens their discomfort. After your colposcopy, please refrain from using tampons, douching, or intercourse for 72 hours.
