Our EMS Education program is designed to provide quality, local, EMS education while meeting the scheduling needs of the adult learner. Interactive, personalized learning. We want YOU to learn. Our instructors understand that students learn in a variety of ways. We meet with each student individually to make sure our education is meeting the needs of the student. Our courses are tailored to encompass a variety of learning styles. Hands-on, scenario-based learning is a core concept of our program.

Emergency Medical Responder Initial Hybrid Course (EMR) - Classes offered each Fall
This Hybrid in-classroom and online course will prepare the participant to become an Emergency Medical Responder with the State of Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB). The program follows a rigorous course of study that includes online lecture, online testing, assignments and practical skills. The opportunity to sit for National Emergency Medical Responder Certification examination is available by advanced request. Emergency Medical Responder Initial Accelerated Hybrid Course (EMR) - Classes offered each January
This Accelerated Hybrid in-classroom and online course will prepare the participant to become an Emergency Medical Responder with the State of Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB). This course has been largely condensed from the typical EMR hybrid course schedule for an accelerated learning experience and includes a large amount of at-home coursework in a rapid timetable. Emergency Medical Technician Completion Course (EMT) - Classes offered each Spring
This scenario-based learning course will prepare the Current Emergency Medical Responder student to become an Emergency Medical Technician. Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) practical and written exams. The program includes online content, lecture, scenario-based learning format, practical skills, and field internship. Emergency Medical Responder Refresher Course (EMR Refresher) - Tentatively Scheduled October 2019
This 16-hour course will allow the participant to renew his or her Emergency Medical Responder registration and is designed to meet the requirements of the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Board (EMSRB) EMR Refresher requirements.This course includes AHA CPR Basic Life Support certification renewal.
Emergency Medical Technician Refresher Course (EMT Refresher) - Classes offered each February and March
This 24-hour course will allow the participant to renew his or her Emergency Medical Technician registration and is designed to meet the requirements of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Emergency Medical Technician refresher. The curriculum is based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National EMS Education National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) (2016). AHA BLS CPR, HeartSaver CPR/AED, and HeartSaver First Aid Courses - Multiple class dates avaiable
These American Heart Association courses allow the student to obtain CPR and First Aid certification. The Basic Life Support (BLS) course results in certification for the Healthcare Provider. Heartsaver courses are designed for the non-healthcare provider, such as community members, childcare providers and industrial repsonse teams to become certified in CPR, AED and First Aid skills. AHA ACLS Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Initial and Renewal Courses
This American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course results in the renewal or initial certification (ACLS). All renewal courses must be completed within 6 months of the end of the expiration month listed on your current certification card. Students presenting for a renewal course must provide their current ACLS card for expiration date validation. Blended eLearning ACLS HeartCode Courses also available!
EMS Customized Education Services - On-site services available!
Customized Education Services (CES) are available through NH+C EMS Education. Contact us for more information about customized, private and on-site education services for your agency. All of our EMS Education and American Heart Association courses can be held on-site! Minimum class sizes apply.
Registration is required for ALL classes and is available online 24 hours a day. No walk-ins will be allowed. Course size is limited. Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list will be established. Agencies can be invoiced. Discounts may apply, contact us for more information.
About the Instructor
Julia Smith is an RN, NR-EMT with over 18 years of service at Northfield Hospital. She has worked as a pre-hospital and in-hospital EMT, and is currently a RN in the Emergency Department. She is Education Coordinator & Lead Instructor for the NH+C EMS Education Program. Her education includes an Associate Degree of Nursing, as well as national and state certified Emergency Medical Technician. She is a Department of Transportation EMS Certified Instructor, American Heart Association BLS and ACLS Instructor, and EMSRB Approved Agent. She has been awarded two community awards for her EMS work: Donald G. Sommers Award 2011, Northfield Area Ambulance Association and the “Making a Difference” Award 2013, Northfield Healthy Community Initiative. In April, 2018, her article discussing the importance of emotional well-being education in EMS courses was published in the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. She worked as an EMS skills instructor for Hennepin Technical College from 2009-2012. She is currently the lead EMS instructor for Northfield EMS, teaching both American Heart Association and EMS Education Certification courses.
