Our instructors understand that students learn in a variety of ways. We meet with each student individually to make sure our education is meeting the needs of the student. Our courses are tailored to encompass a variety of learning styles. Scenario-based learning is a core concept of our program.

Registration is required for ALL classes. No walk-ins will be allowed. Course size is limited.
Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list will be established. Agencies can be invoiced. Discounts may apply, contact us for more information.
EMR Initial Course
(Part 1 of 2; EMT Initial)
This 64-hour course will prepare the participant to become an Emergency Medical Responder with the State of Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB). In addition, students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) written exam for Emergency Medical Responder if they so choose.
The curriculum is based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National EMS Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Responder and Emergency Medical Technician (2009). The program follows a rigorous course of study that includes lecture, and practical skills. This class is also the first part of the two part EMT – Initial class.
EMR Initial is offered in the evenings twice yearly. Fall courses are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with occasional Saturdays from September – November. Spring classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with occasional Saturdays from February – May.
EMT Completion Course
(Part 2 of 2; EMT Initial)
This approximately 100 hour course will prepare the current EMR (First Responder) to become an Emergency Medical Technician. Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) practical and written exams.
The curriculum is based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National EMS Education Standards for the Emergency Medical Technician (2009). The program follows a rigorous course of study that includes lecture, practical skills, and field internship. College credits are not offered, but participants are encouraged to check with their educational institution for possible credit allowances.
EMT Completion is offered in the evenings twice yearly. Fall courses are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with occasional Saturdays from September – November. Spring classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with occasional Saturdays from February – May.
EMT and EMR Refresher Courses
Our EMT and EMR Refresher courses meet the requirements set by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and Minnesota EMSRB for recertification. Our courses are compliant with the new NCCP recertification requirements. EMR Refreshers are held annually in September. EMT Refreshers are held annually in February.
About the Instructor
Julia Smith is an RN, NR-EMT with over 15 years of service at Northfield Hospital. She has worked as a pre-hospital and in-house EMT and RN. She is currently a RN in the Emergency Department and the EMS Education Coordinator & Lead Instructor. Her education includes an Associate Degree of Nursing and Emergency Medical Technician national certification. She is a Department of Transportation EMS Certified Instructor, American Heart Association BLS and ACLS Instructor, and EMSRB Approved Agent. She has been awarded two community awards for her EMS work: Donald G. Sommers Award 2011, Northfield Area Ambulance Association and the “Making a Difference” Award 2013, Northfield Healthy Community Initiative. She worked as an EMS skills instructor for Hennepin Technical College from 2009-2012. She is currently the lead EMS external instructor for Northfield EMS, teaching both EMR and EMT initial and refresher courses.
