Volunteer Orientation

Our goal is to meet the needs of our patients and community by delivering high‑quality service that reflects the Northfield Hospital + Clinics standard of care—while also providing a meaningful and rewarding experience for our volunteers.

Volunteers have fun, meet interesting people, gain career‑related experience, and make a lasting impression on patients, families, and staff.

Volunteer Requirements

  • General Requirements
  • All volunteers must:
  • Apply online
  • Complete a screening process (may take up to one month), including: 
    • Attendance at a 1.5‑hour volunteer orientation
    • Completion of a Minnesota Department of Human Services Background Study
    • Completion of a Volunteer Pre‑Placement Health Evaluation, including: 
      • TB screening
      • Immunization review
      • Annual influenza vaccination required


Volunteer Opportunity Directory

Rehabilitation Services – Northfield (Off Campus)

  • Days: Monday–Friday
  • Shifts: 2‑hour shifts between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Age Requirement: 16 years and older

Responsibilities include:

  • Restocking items
  • Sanitizing spaces
  • Organizing lobby areas
  • Pulling charts and copying
  • Greeting patients as appropriate

Emergency Department

  • Days: Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday
  • Shifts: 4‑hour shifts between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
  • Age Requirement: 18 years and older

Responsibilities include:

  • Cleaning rooms
  • Restocking linens
  • Sanitizing areas
  • Serving as a courier for specimens, paperwork, and equipment

Medical–Surgical Floor

  • Days: 7 days per week
  • Shifts: 2‑hour shifts
  • Age Requirement: 18 years and older

Responsibilities include:

  • Cleaning items and keeping hallways clear
  • Assisting Med/Surg staff as needed
  • Answering call lights and communicating needs to the appropriate staff member
  • Concierge Program: Visiting and socializing with patients; offering coffee, snacks, games, and craft supplies
  • Transporting patients as applicable
  • Monitoring and maintaining the kitchen, including making coffee and ordering supplies
  • Restocking supplies
  • Other duties as assigned

Surgery Center

  • Days: Monday–Friday
  • Shifts: Vary between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Age Requirement: 18 years and older

Responsibilities include:

  • Greeting and supporting family members
  • Making coffee
  • Assisting with clerical projects

Birth Center

  • Days: 7 days per week
  • Shifts: 2‑hour shifts
  • Age Requirement: 18 years and older

Responsibilities include:

  • Greeting patients and family members
  • Offering beverages and keeping the waiting area neat
  • Assisting the Birth Center front desk with visitor check‑in
  • Checking and organizing supplies
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Assisting with clerical needs

Wound Clinic

  • Days: Monday–Friday
  • Shifts: 2‑hour shifts between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Responsibilities include:

  • Accompanying patients to hospital departments
  • Stocking supplies and rooms
  • Cleaning and turning over rooms after visits
  • Running errands for nurses
  • Clerical and administrative phone duties
  • Assisting wound healing staff, patients, and families as needed

Meals on Wheels

Applications currently being accepted

  • Days: 6 days per week
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Responsibilities include:

  • Picking up prepared meals at the hospital
  • Delivering meals to community members along a designated route

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Access to a personal vehicle
