Keeping Hydrated – Why is Water Important?

August 2, 2016

Dehydration is the loss of water from the body. As you age, you are more at risk for dehydration. Your body’s ability to conserve water is reduced. Your sense of thirst becomes less acute and you are less able to respond to changes in temperature.

Water makes up 60% of your body weight and plays a vital role in the functioning of your body. Water regulates body temperature, moistens tissues, lubricates joints, helps flush out waste, carries nutrients to cells and protects organs.

Here are some tips to keep your body hydrated:

Get in the habit of drinking water – when you wake up, at each meal and between meals. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water – at that point, dehydration has already started.

Carry a water bottle when you’re on the go.

Minimize caffeinated beverages – their diuretic effect can cause the kidneys to excrete more water.

And finally… choose hydrating foods – fruits and vegetables are great options to help keep your body hydrated.
