Just 30 minutes south of the Twin Cities, Northfield (pop. 21,000) is a charming, historic river town, home to two nationally-ranked liberal arts institutions, Carleton College and St. Olaf College, which contributes to its reputation as a community of ideas and imagination.

It is a vibrant, progressive community that offers affordability and value. It has a strong commercial, industrial and agricultural base and celebrates education and entrepreneurial energy.

With its 150 years of history, art, culture and education, it offers something for everyone. Nature lovers flock to hike the trails of Cowling Arboretum and Nerstrand Woods, bicyclists explore the varied terrain in the area, foodies savor the many dining options available and music aficionados enjoy an eclectic music scene.

The first weekend after Labor Day, everyone pours into town for Defeat of Jesse James Days. This annual festival resembles a mini-state fair and receives high marks for its dramatic and authentic re-enactment of the attempted bank robbery in 1876 by Jesse James and company.

The St. Olaf Christmas Festival and Winter Walk bring the holiday season to life, and every three years the Vintage Band Festival delivers 100 inspiring concerts over four days in August.
