New Lactation Services Offered at the Birth Center

May 8, 2019

Moms and babies have a new resource for help with mealtimes.

The Birth Center at Northfield Hospital now offers lactation services, led by board-certified lactation consultant Jennifer Kleine, RN, BSN, IBCLC.

Women can make an appointment to meet with Jennifer one-on-one in the comfortable, relaxed setting of a private office at the Birth Center. Services cover the full range of lactation needs for mom or baby:

How to breastfeed Breastfeeding at work or school Problems with the breast or nipple Low milk supply Pumping and storing breast milk Bottle feeding and giving expressed milk Taking medicines while breastfeeding What to do when the baby doesn’t want to breastfeed What to do when the baby is slow to gain weight How to wean your baby from breastfeeding

All women are welcome, wherever your baby was born.

For women who choose not to breastfeed, a lactation consultation can help with post-partum breast care. (Concerns about baby’s health while bottle-feeding are best addressed by your pediatrician or primary care provider.)

To make an appointment, call (507) 646-1216. Lactation services are often covered by insurance; check with your insurance carrier about your coverage by calling the number on your insurance card.

Jennifer joins Northfield Hospital + Clinics from Denver Health Medical Center, where she developed a weekly group lactation clinic. She presented research on how the clinic helped women breastfeed longer to the American Academy of Pediatrics Annual Conference in 2016.

Jennifer is a graduate of University of Colorado Health Sciences Center College of Nursing, and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She has worked with breastfeeding couples for over 15 years and understands that breastfeeding is a unique and personal experience for each mother and baby.

“I feel privileged to be able to provide education and support to help make breastfeeding a positive experience for families,” Jennifer says. “I’m here to help women meet their breastfeeding goals and enjoy this time with their baby.”

Jennifer also cares for Birth Center patients in the hours and days after birth, and consults with new moms at Baby Talk, a weekly support group run by Community Education in Northfield.

Over 550 babies are born in the Birth Center each year.
